Over the years many well-known productions were shown on the Aldwych stage - including the Aldwych farces, at the time a very famous comedy show. A Streetcar Named Desire was another production at the theatre, starring Vivien Leigh, and directed by Laurence Olivier. In the 1960s there was a lot of speculation about where the Royal Shakespeare Company of Stratford-upon-Avon was to base its London productions for the next 3 years.
