The Aldwych Theatre opened on December 23rd 1905, with a newer version of a pantomime called Bluebell. Over the years many well-known productions were shown on the Aldwych stage - including the Aldwych farces, at the time a very famous comedy show. A Streetcar Named Desire was another production at the theatre, starring Vivien Leigh, and directed by Laurence Olivier. In the 1960s there was a lot of speculation about where the Royal Shakespeare Company of Stratford-upon-Avon was to base its London productions for the next 3 years. They chose the Aldwych but ended up staying there for 20 years.

In recent years the Aldwych Theatre hosted a mixture of plays, comedies, and musicals. Whistle Down The Wind by Andrew Lloyd Webber played until 2001. Fame had an extended run there for 4 years, and it was the home to the British musical version of Dirty Dancing, which played for 5 years. Tina - The Tina Turner Musical has been showing at the Aldwych Theatre since February 2019.
